Working principles
Electromagnetic force serves as the basis for the operation of a micro DC motor. The device has two major parts- a rotor which rotates while the other one is stationary and is called a stator. A current passes through the rotor’s windings after which a magnetic field is developed. The generated field interacts with the magnetic field possessed by the stator creating a torque that allows the rotor to turn.
Basic parts of a micro motor in the lineup includes
There are four prime components found in a micro dc motor which are armature, magnetic field, commutator, and brushes. The armature, which is the rotating part with the windings, is important for developing the torque which is required to spin the motor shaft. An armature induces a torque pulse from the stator which is created by permanent magnets or electromagnets thereby allowing the armature to spin.
Micro motors operate on specified voltage and current ratings, which are sometimes referred to as electrical ratings, and these characteristics are essential for micro dc motors. These parameters basically define the limits of operations for the motor. Moreover, these parameters also help in safeguarding the unit such that excessive voltage or high current levels does not lead to any damage or overheating.
When it comes to control methods of micro DC motors, they can be controlled using techniques such as PWM and variable voltage controls. With the application of PWM, speed can be controlled in a more accurate manner through adjusting the duty cycle of the voltage that was applied. In a similar fashion, motor control can also be achieved through altering the supply voltage that is fed to the motor, which in turn varies the speed of the motor. These control techniques highlight the versatility of micro DC motors in diverse applications that may require certain degree of motor characteristics management in order to perform up to a particular standard.
